Athletic scholarships

How athletic scholarships work in the US

US universities award scholarships to athletes every year. If you perform well in your sport, you can study in the US for free, or with up to a 100% discount.

A different route

Getting in through sport is a different route into university

You are not applying with grades alone. The coach sees an athlete who will make the team stronger, and that changes the whole equation.

  • The coach assesses your athletic level

and can back your application for admission.

  • You are not competing on academics alone

coaches are looking for athletes who will strengthen their team.

  • More options for admission

at universities that genuinely suit you.

Your results are part of your admission.

What it covers

What an athletic scholarship can cover

  • Tuition

    University tuition fees.

  • Housing

    Dormitory accommodation.

  • Meals

    The university dining plan.

  • Insurance

The health insurance required for study and sport.

From partial to full scholarships

The size and make-up of the award depend on the university, league and division.

Sports

More than 20 sports that can earn you a scholarship

The NCAA list keeps growing. If your sport is not here, write to us: an athlete from one sport can sometimes cross over to another.

Choosing a league

You can earn a scholarship in any league

Many athletes aim straight at the NCAA and hear nothing back, have no idea where to go, or pick the wrong league and lose years. Two athletes with the same results can get completely different offers: the difference is not talent, it is strategy. What matters is knowing your real level and choosing a path that fits you, not the one everyone else takes.

How the system works

How athletic scholarships in the USA actually work

A short orientation to the system you are about to deal with. The specifics of your own case we work through on the free call, association rules change, and there are no universal answers here.

Leagues and divisions: where the money actually is

US college sport has several leagues: the NCAA with its divisions D1-D3, the NAIA and the NJCAA, and athletic money does not exist in all of them. This is the first thing to understand: the level sets both the requirements and the size of the award.

  • NCAA Division I

    Athletic scholarships available

The highest level and the fiercest competition. Large budgets, full training facilities, a dense competition calendar. Athletic and academic requirements are at their most demanding.

  • NCAA Division II

    Athletic scholarships available

A balance between sport and study. Awards are more often partial, but combined with academic aid they frequently cover most of the cost. A realistic target for most strong CIS athletes.

  • NCAA Division III

    No athletic scholarships

No athletic money at all here. But academic and need-based grants exist, and for a strong student the final package can end up comparable to D2.

  • NAIA

    Athletic scholarships available

A separate association with more flexible admission rules and its own eligibility centre. Often a faster and more predictable route for an international athlete.

  • NJCAA

    Scholarships in D1 and D2

Two-year colleges. A solid starting point: build up your English and academics, put real playing statistics together, then transfer to a four-year university on stronger terms.

Full or partial: where the difference comes from

Not every scholarship covers everything. In some sports a programme holds a fixed number of full awards, and you either get one whole or you get nothing. In most of the rest the coach holds one budget and divides it between athletes, which is where 20%, 50% and 70% awards come from. That is why two athletes at the same level in different sports can receive very different offers, and why the real cost of a year is always calculated from the specific offer rather than from a percentage.

What you will need

  • Athletic results

Official results, statistics, ranking, anything that objectively proves your level. For swimming and track that means times; for team sports, statistics and film.

  • Highlight reel

Three to five minutes where the coach can see you, not your team. Required for team sports: it is the first thing coaches watch and often what they decide on.

  • Transcripts

Translated and certified school records. Your GPA affects both eligibility and the academic portion of the package.

  • English

TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo, the exact test and the required score depend on the university. A basic level is enough to begin the process.

How long it takes

Two to six months on average from the start of work to the first offer, depending on the sport and the athlete’s level. Recruiting is tied to the season: every sport has its own window when coaches are genuinely filling a roster. Starting a year ahead of your intended enrolment is the one factor on this list that is entirely in your control.

What you still have to pay for

Even with tuition fully covered, some costs are never part of a scholarship: flights, language tests, document translation and evaluation, consular fees and the visa, roughly $2,000-$3,000. That is separate from our fee, and we say so before the work starts rather than after.
